How to Commission a Three Dimensional Model
Even if you’ve commissioned a model before, no two models are alike, and there’s a number of considerations and decisions to make ahead of getting started. Whether you have a very specific brief, or just an idea, we will work with you to produce a stunning model that meets your requirements.
What is the model for?
Ok, so maybe this is an obvious one, but it’s worth considering who the audience is when you’re making the decisions about your model. Is it to get planning permission? If so, it will likely be important to show the surrounding context of your scheme. If it is a museum piece, where will it be displayed, and with what other supporting materials? You should also think about whether it will need to be frequently moved, on public view, hung on a wall; whether you want any lights or interactive elements.

Do you have a budget for your model?
Finch & Fouracre are keen to come up with solutions for any budget, but it should be known that hand crafted models take time. As such, very few of our models have come in at under £1000, and most are upwards of £3000 (plus VAT). If you have a limited or strict budget, please let us know, and we will come up with the best solution for your funds.
A perspex cover for a model is recommended for a model which will be on public display, and depending on the size of the model, cost a further £300 - £600 (+ VAT).
Size isn’t everything! The cost of a model depends on the level of detail, the complexity of the design, as well as the overall size of the model. That’s why it’s important when requesting a quote to consider these options.

Style, scale and size of model
Feel free to gather images (from our website, or elsewhere) of models which you like the look of - it really helps us get a sense of the type of model you’re looking for. The materials we use are usually various types of timber, plastics, as well as cork, some metals, and painted finishes.
We’re happy to quote for different styles and scales of models so you can compare your options. Of course, a larger scale will enable more detail, but would result in a bigger model, or less of the scheme modelled. While we prefer to work with standard scales (1:100, 1:200, 1:500 etc), we’re happy to use whatever is required!
It’s worth considering if it needs to look realistic to communicate specific design decisions, or should it be stylised to fit in with other visuals for the project. We’re happy to offer opinions and expertise on this.

What information do you need to provide for getting a model quote?
If you have a set of drawings, particularly if you require a quote for an architectural model, please email these over, as PDFs. If your model is going to included any surrounding land, topographic (contour) information is really useful. If you just have a sketch, an idea, a concept, then that’s fine, part of our service will be to develop this into a design from which to make the model.
